The 2015 iKusasa Cross Mentorship Program in KZN is the first expansion of the Bokamoso program.Within the KZN province we are focusing on the eThekwini Municipal Area (Durban). Last year, the average matric pass rate for this entire area was 76.55%, but there is a large range between the different schools. This speaks to both the challenges and opportunities of supporting these learners.
We are privileged to have the involvement of just over 100 enthusiastic, engaged and incredible learners from 5 different schools around Durban. We are excited to be on this journey with them.
Hunt Road Secondary School (Berea)
Hunt Road Secondary School’s motto is ‘Excellence through Education’. It is based within Central Durban and has over 500 learners. Many of the learners come from surrounding former township areas such as Chesterville as well as further afield from KwaMashu and Umlazi. They are a wonderful and dynamic group of learners.
Umkhumbane Secondary School (Cato Manor/ Chesterville)
uMkhumbane Secondary School is based in the historic former township area of Cato Manor. The learners have an enthusiasm for learning and a strong desire for change. They are one of five schools in the area who are part of the Umkhumbane Schools Project established in 2012 which provides a range of programmes aimed at improving maths and science learning and performance.
Senzokwethu High School (Ntuzuma)
The buildings of Senzokwethu High School were initially used as a technical college but were transformed more recently into a primary and secondary school filled with youthful energy. Senzokwethu has passionate and committed learners, 30 of whom are part of the iKusasa program. This high school is based in the Ntuzuma area north of Durban, and has maintained an average reported Matric pass rate of 90% over the last 3 years.
Siyajabula High School (KwaNyuswa)
This school is based in the peri-urban area of KwaNyuswa within the Valley of 1000 Hills. Siyajabula has had some remarkable achievements in the recent years such as the almost 20% increase in their reported Matric pass rate from 2012 until last year. The learners are a keen group ready to tackle any challenges and take advantage of opportunities.
Bechet High School (Sydenham)
Bechet High School was established in 1955. Its school motto of ‘Success through Hard Work’ has been a foundation embedded in the hearts and minds of the many successful students that have come through the schooling system. The outstanding teachers and leadership have positively shaped the characters of many; equipping these learners with lifelong skills whilst providing a high standard of education. We are fortunate to have this group of insightful and open learners participating in the programme.
